Skeet Range opening Saturday, Nov. 11, Trap Range reopening Sunday, Nov. 12

O‘AHU -- The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is pleased to announce the public reopening of the trap and skeet ranges at the Koko Head Shooting Complex (KHSC) beginning this weekend.

Operated by Koko Head Skeet Club, the Skeet Range will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, and will be available on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Trap Range, operated by Honolulu Trap Club, will reopen Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, and will be available Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hours of operation for both of these ranges are subject to change based on the discretion of the Range Safety Officer.

Hiring Full-time Range Attendant

To help improve the availability and effective operations of the KHSC ranges, DPR is actively recruiting a full-time range attendant to supervise, coordinate, and direct the ranges' activities. The position pays $4,690/month, and offers the amazing benefits offered to City civil service employees including: pension, healthcare, paid time off, and so much more! Kalaniana‘ole Highway Closure

The Koko Head Shooting Complex will operate under its regular schedule on Sunday, November 19, 2023 despite an early morning closure of Kalaniana‘ole Highway due to the annual Kaiwi Coast Run & Walk. The highway will be closed in the eastbound direction beginning at 5:10 a.m., and completely closed beginning at 6:15 a.m. The entry to Koko Head Shooting Complex is expected to reopen between 7:45 a.m. and 8 a.m. that morning. Shooters are advised to access the complex from the Sandy Beach Park direction. For more information please visit https://www.kaiwicoastrun.org/

KHSC was closed on Sept. 16, 2022 after the City received notice that many of the complex employees received blood test results indicating elevated levels of lead. These test results indicated that the lead levels were well below the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and medically established levels of concern. Although the levels did not pose an immediate health risk to the staff, they were relocated out of an abundance of caution.

Following significant improvements to the grounds and complex operations, the KHSC archery range reopened on March 24, 2023, with the pistol and rifle ranges reopening on April 29, 2023. Due to the limited staffing, the pistol and rifle ranges continue to only operate on weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., utilizing the pros.hnl.info free online reservation system for shooters to book 1-hour 20-minute time slots. Walk-in use of the ranges during regular hours of operation is available.
